FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

1. What is Fresh Look?

Lucie Review L.A. brings you "Fresh Look" a two-day, juried Portfolio Review during the inaugural Month of Photography Los Angeles (MOPLA) advanced by The Lucie Foundation. This review is intended to foster comprehensive and critical conversations between photography industry professionals and serious emerging photographers. Lucie Review L.A. "Fresh Look" aims to bring together gallery directors, curators, photo editors, art directors, publishers and agents to offer the most complete myriad of experts who are integral to the contemporary practice and art of photography.

2. What does a “juried” Portfolio Review mean?

“Juried” in this case means that there is a preliminary screening process to ensure the quality of work that will be presented to the Reviewing Panel. Once the preliminary selection takes place, you will be notified if you have qualified to participate in the review, or if your portfolio will have to try again next year.

3. Who will facilitate the preliminary judging process?

The Lucie Review committee.

4. Who is eligible? And what kind of work should I consider submitting?

Any serious and emerging photographer with a substantial body of work, portfolio, or concentrated project is eligible. This review is designed for the emerging photographer to meet and receive guidance from industry professionals. Please be sure to submit only your best and finalized work, and not work in progress.

5. Is there a fee to participate?

The submission fee to be considered is $50. This does not guarantee a day of review if your portfolio does not make the preliminary selection process. Each day is $250. This includes meeting with 6 reviewers for 20-minute intervals. If you are selected to participate, the submission fee will be deducted from your overall fee and you will only need to pay the difference of $200.

6. Who is on the panel of Reviewers?

Gallery directors, curators, photo editors, art directors, publishers and agents.

6. How do I sign up to meet with a particular reviewer?

Due to the nature of democracy, there will be a first come first serve sign up list and hour prior to start of the review. You will be able to sign in based upon availability. The sign up list will close 20 minutes before the start of the review so that we can provide the reviewers the names of photographers with whom they will be reviewing.

7. What is the best way to submit my portfolio for the submission process?

You may send a physical portfolio of prints (though not mandatory), neatly compiled into a folder with sleeves. Should you send a physical portfolio, please be sure to also include a CD containing the digital files that correspond with your physical prints. You also have the option of sending a CD (without physical photographs), as we will be reviewing portfolios with large-scale projections.

8. If I am submitting my portfolio as digital files, what specs should I abide by?

If you are submitting digital files, you must send a corresponding list with thumbnails with the details per image. Your files should be 72 DPI at 1440 pixels on the longest side of the image for projection purposes.

9. If I am selected for the review, am I obligated to bring the same collection of work to the one-on-one reviews?

It is recommended to bring the work that was accepted for the preliminary selection as it has proven to be a strong body of work (up to 20 photographs). We would not recommend bring more than two bodies of work, as there is a time constraint with each reviewer to receive the most critical feedback.

10. How should I present my work to the reviewers at the actual review?

We will not be providing computers or projectors for digital photographs. It is recommended to bring prints of your work at a decent portable size that is neatly organized for efficient viewing. If you would like to bring your laptop, please keep in mind battery life, and the possibility of not being able to recharge between meetings.

11. How many pieces can I/should I bring to the review?

Please remember that you will meet with six individuals for intervals of 20-minutes. To maximize meaningful discussion, it is best not to bring more than two complete bodies of work.

12. If I submit prints for consideration, will they be returned?

We will not be mailing back any portfolios. Please do not send original work, only copies or duplicates.
